Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.
Have you ever had to move to a new community, state or country? My family emigrated here in 2000 and to be honest, we have never looked back. It was our choice to move from the UK, so the transition wasn't anything like that of Jeremiah.
However, from the first time we set foot onto Australian soil we were determined to 'do life' in our community. Our motto has always been to step up, step in and make a difference, as we believe that, as individuals, we are to live our lives as part of the community in which we reside.
God has placed us in our communities and culture on purpose. God has placed us where we are to seek the welfare of our city or those around us. We must recognise that our welfare is completely intertwined with the welfare of this larger community surrounding us.
How would you feel about praying for the capital city of the empire you saw as your enemy (which is what the Lord tells the people to do)?
I believe that if we pray and work for the welfare of the place where we live, we will bear witness to the love of God in our communities.
As you pray this month, I encourage you to sit and think about your own community, and pray into the needs that, when you take the time to look, will be identified.
Pray and seek peace for your community because in that peace you too shall find peace.
Are you "doing life" in your community? How can you intentionally seek the welfare of the community around you?
